Terms of use
Last updated November 5, 2026. These terms are an agreement between you (the business using Kept) and Alexander Wondwossen ("we"). By installing or using Kept, or by subscribing, you accept them.
1. What Kept is
Kept is Mac software that answers questions using documents you give it, with an AI model that runs on your Mac through Ollama. Kept tells you what your documents say. It doesn't give legal, tax, financial, medical or other professional advice, and its answers can be wrong. Please read About Kept's answers — it's part of these terms.
2. Free trial
Kept includes a free 14-day trial with everything turned on. No payment details are needed, and nothing happens automatically when it ends: Kept simply stops answering questions until you subscribe. Your documents and past answers stay on your Mac either way.
3. Subscription and billing
- After the trial, a subscription (monthly or yearly) is needed to keep asking questions. Everything else — your documents, past answers and settings — keeps working without one.
- The subscription is billed in advance each month or each year, depending on the plan you choose, through Stripe, our payment processor, and renews automatically until you cancel. The current price is shown at kept.computer; applicable taxes may be added at checkout.
- If a renewal payment fails, Kept will ask you to update your card at kept.computer/account. If it isn't paid, the subscription ends and asking stops.
- We may change the price with at least 30 days' notice by email. The new price applies from your next billing date after that. If you don't want to pay it, cancel before then.
- One subscription covers one Mac running Kept for one business. Colleagues on your network may ask questions through that Mac. Running Kept for several separate businesses needs a subscription for each.
4. Cancelling and refunds
- You can cancel any time at kept.computer/account — no phone calls, no notice period. Kept keeps working until the end of the month or year you've paid for.
- There are no refunds for partial months or years, except where the law requires them.
- If you subscribe again later, you simply start a new subscription. Your documents will still be on your Mac if Kept is still installed.
5. Your licence key
- When you subscribe, you receive a licence key. Enter it in Kept to activate your subscription. Keep it reasonably private: anyone with the key could use your subscription.
- Kept renews the key's licence automatically, a few days before each paid period ends, by sending only the key and a random ID for that copy of Kept to kept.computer. A key works on one Mac at a time: to move it, use "Remove licence from this Mac" in Kept, or free it from your account page (once a day). If your Mac is offline, there's a grace period of about a week before asking stops.
- If your key is lost or leaks, contact us and we'll sort it out. We may replace or deactivate a key that's being shared or used fraudulently; if we do, we'll give you a new one unless the use was dishonest.
6. Licence to use Kept
While your trial or subscription is active, we grant you a non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use Kept for your business. You agree not to:
- resell, rent or sublicense Kept, or offer it as a service to others;
- remove or work around its licence checks, or help others do so;
- reverse engineer it, except where the law allows this despite these terms;
- use Kept, the website or the licence server in a way that breaks the law or deliberately disrupts them for others.
7. Your documents and data
Your documents remain yours; these terms give us no rights to them. They stay on your Mac, and we never receive them (see the privacy policy). You're responsible for:
- having the right to use the documents you add to Kept;
- backing up your Mac — Kept's data is only as safe as the Mac it lives on;
- deciding who can use the Mac and who on your network can reach Kept, and for the questions they ask;
- complying with the privacy and confidentiality rules that apply to your business when you put other people's information into your documents.
8. Privacy
The privacy policy explains the little we receive (essentially: billing details through Stripe and your licence key) and what stays on your Mac (everything else). It's part of these terms.
9. Third-party software
Kept relies on Ollama and on open AI models, which you download and which are provided by others under their own licences. We don't control them, don't warrant them and aren't responsible for them. Payment is handled by Stripe under its own terms.
10. Updates
Kept can check for updates and install them, but only if you turn that on. We're not obliged to provide updates, and some fixes or improvements may only be available by updating. An update may change or remove features, though we try not to take things away.
11. No warranty
Kept is provided "as is" and "as available". AI answers can be incomplete or wrong, even with sources shown — check the source before relying on an answer. To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We don't promise that Kept will be uninterrupted or error-free.
12. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows: our total liability for all claims relating to Kept, taken together, is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the first claim. We aren't liable for indirect or consequential losses, lost profits, lost data, or decisions made based on Kept's answers. Some laws don't allow parts of this section; where that's the case, it applies only as far as the law permits.
13. Ending these terms
- You can stop using Kept at any time. Uninstalling Kept (Kept menu → Uninstall Kept…) removes it and its data from your Mac.
- We may suspend or end your subscription if you seriously breach these terms — for example, by working around licence checks or reselling Kept. If we end it for our own reasons instead, we'll refund the unused part of the current month or year.
- When your subscription ends for any reason, asking stops but nothing is deleted from your Mac. Sections 7, 11, 12 and 15 survive.
14. Changes to these terms
If we change these terms in a way that matters, we'll email subscribers at least 30 days before the change takes effect and update the date above. If you keep using Kept after that, the new terms apply. If you don't agree with a change, cancel before it takes effect.
15. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. Any dispute relating to Kept or these terms will be resolved in the courts of Ontario. If you're buying as a consumer, nothing in these terms takes away protections your local law gives you that can't be waived.
16. General
If part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce a term right away, we haven't given it up. You may not transfer this agreement without our consent; we may transfer it to someone who takes over Kept, on the same terms. These terms, the privacy policy and About Kept's answers are the whole agreement about Kept.
