Privacy policy
Last updated November 7, 2026. Kept is made by Alexander Wondwossen ("we"). Our mailing address is available on request at hello@kept.computer. This policy covers the Kept app, the kept.computer website, and buying a subscription.
The short version
Kept runs on your Mac. Your documents, the questions you ask and Kept's answers stay on your Mac. We never receive them, and we couldn't read them if we wanted to. The only things we receive are what's needed to sell you a subscription and keep it running: billing details (through Stripe) and your licence key.
What stays on your Mac (we never receive it)
- Your documents, Kept's copies of them, the text read from scanned pages, and the search index built from them.
- Your questions, Kept's answers, your feedback on answers ("Good answer", "Mark as wrong"), and your chat history.
- Your team profile: your team name, the tone you chose and the instructions you give Kept.
- Your settings, including the username and password for network access (the password is stored as a salted hash, not as the password itself).
- The AI's work: everything the model reads and writes happens on your Mac, through Ollama. Your documents are never used to train AI models — ours or anyone else's.
Scanned pages are read with Apple's text recognition, which also runs on your Mac. Kept contains no analytics, advertising or tracking code, and the kept.computer website sets no cookies and uses no analytics. You can check this yourself: the home page lists every connection Kept makes and a Terminal command that shows them while Kept runs.
What we receive, and when
- When you subscribe: your name, email address, billing address and payment details are collected by Stripe, our payment processor, on Stripe's own pages. We see your email, your subscription status and the last four digits of your card. We never see your full card number.
- Your licence key: to check and renew your subscription, Kept sends your licence key to kept.computer, about once a month, together with a random ID that Kept makes for itself when first opened (so a key works on one Mac at a time). That ID isn't taken from your Mac's hardware and says nothing about you. The request contains only these two — no name, no device details, nothing about your documents. Like any web request, it also reveals your internet (IP) address to our hosting provider.
- Update checks, only if you turn them on: Kept asks kept.computer for the latest version, about once a day. The request carries no information about you or your business beyond what any web request does (IP address, and the app's version in the request header). No system profile is sent. You can turn this off any time in Settings → Privacy & data.
- When you visit kept.computer: our host, Cloudflare, sees the standard details of any web request (your IP address, browser type, pages requested) to serve the site and protect it from abuse. We run no analytics on top of that.
- If you email us: whatever you choose to send, at the address you send it from.
What we never do
- We never receive your documents, questions or answers, so we can't read, sell or lose them.
- We don't sell or rent personal information, and we don't share it for advertising.
- We don't track you across the web, and we don't profile you.
- We don't use your data to train AI models.
What we use it for
We use what we receive to provide and bill your subscription, send your licence key and important notices (like a price change), answer support requests, prevent fraud and abuse of the licence server, and meet legal and tax obligations. That's all.
Who else handles it
- Stripe processes payments and stores billing details (Stripe's privacy policy).
- Cloudflare hosts kept.computer and stores the link between your licence key, your Stripe subscription and the email from checkout.
- Resend delivers the email with your licence key.
These providers may process data outside Canada, mainly in the United States, where local authorities may have lawful access to it. Wherever they process it, they are bound by their contracts with us and their published privacy policies to protect it to a comparable standard. We don't use providers beyond these three.
How we protect it
All connections to kept.computer use HTTPS. Licence keys are long and random, and the link between a key and a subscription is stored with our host under access controls. We deliberately hold as little as possible: the best protection for your documents is that they never reach us in the first place.
How long we keep it
- Billing records: as long as tax law requires (6 years in Canada).
- Licence records (key, subscription, checkout email): while your subscription is active and for 12 months after it ends, unless you ask us to delete them sooner.
- Support emails: as long as they're useful for helping you, then deleted.
Ollama and AI models
Kept uses Ollama, separate free software that you install. Ollama downloads AI models from ollama.com and checks for its own updates. Kept helps you turn off Ollama's online AI features during setup, so the model runs only on your Mac. Ollama's own policies apply to Ollama.
Your rights and choices
- You can ask to see, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you by emailing hello@kept.computer. We'll answer within 30 days. Deleting billing records we're legally required to keep has to wait until that requirement ends.
- You can turn update checks off in Settings → Privacy & data. Kept works fully without them.
- To delete everything Kept stored on your Mac, use Settings → Privacy & data → Delete all data, or Kept menu → Uninstall Kept. We can't do this for you — it's your Mac — and we never had a copy.
- If you're not satisfied with how we've handled your personal information, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Children
Kept is for businesses. It isn't directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date above and, for important changes, email subscribers before they take effect. We won't quietly start collecting more.
